Project description

The project “Florecer como marca” focuses on the rebranding and digital strategy for Menta y Canela, a local flower shop in Madrid’s Prosperidad district. The main objective is to redefine the brand identity and strengthen its digital presence, transforming a local, product-focused business into a brand with a strong emotional component, capable of connecting with new audiences and competing in an increasingly digitalised market.

The conceptual starting point is the idea that flowers function as a language: a way of expressing emotions and messages when words are not enough. This insight is captured in the strategic concept “Say it without saying it”, which guides all the project’s design decisions, from the visual identity to the customer experience.

Project challenge

The main challenge is to transform the perception of flowers, understanding them not as decorative objects, but as a means of expressing emotions and messages when words are not enough. From a business perspective, the challenge is to redefine the identity of a local flower shop and strengthen its digital presence, shifting from a product-focused approach to one centred on emotional value and user experience, without losing the sense of closeness that defines a neighbourhood business.

Student inspiration

The inspiration comes from the communicative power of flowers as an emotional language, captured in the concept “Say it without saying it”. As market references, six relevant brands in the sector were analysed: Colvin, Interflora, FloraQueen, Bloom & Wild, Freddie’s Flowers and Arena Flowers. For the visual identity, inspiration comes from the mint and cinnamon plants themselves, as well as from concepts of freshness and warmth, translated into illustrations, organic shapes and contrasting colour palettes.

Creative process

The project follows the Design Thinking methodology, structured into five phases: research (literature review, user questionnaires, an interview with the owner and benchmarking of six brands in the sector); analysis and strategic definition; concept development, including the definition of the buyer persona, the insight and the concept “Say it without saying it”; development of the visual identity and graphic system; and design of final applications for the website, social media, packaging and products, including a navigable web prototype.

Tools

  • Research and data collection

Mixed research methodology (qualitative and quantitative): Google Forms questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis.

  • Design methodology

Design Thinking as the project methodology.

  • Figma

    For website design and prototyping.

  • Graphic design and visual identity

Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign for the development of the graphic system and brand applications.

Visual identity

The new Menta y Canela identity is built around a logo based on the abstraction of a star formed by the petals of mint and cinnamon flowers. The typographic system combines Anton for headings and Poppins for body text. The colour palette features bold, contrasting colours: purple (#41196C), orange (#F3531D), blue (#27628D), beige (#F5DAA0), red (#C3181E), green (#00564E), yellow (#E3A500) and dark grey (#372C2D). The system is completed by graphic patterns featuring organic and floral shapes, applied across the website, social media, packaging and products.

User experience and information architecture

The website proposal features emotion-based navigation, with categories such as “I messed up”, “Just because”, “I’m here for you” and “I want to surprise you”; a simplified purchasing process; personalised messages for cards; integration of extras (chocolates, soft toys); and a mobile-first responsive design. The project is based on the principles of emotional branding and user-centred design (ISO 9241-210:2019), with particular attention to information architecture to improve findability.
